In December 2011, comet Lovejoy dove through the sun’s corona. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured images offering scientists a unique opportunity to observe the phenomenon.
Comet tails have ionized gases which are affected by the sun’s magnetic field, and a comet’s encounter with the sun is a treat for heliophysicits to continue their study of the sun and of comets.
