Comet Grazing the Sun

12/05/2012 by Eliana Mackley Leave a Comment

In December 2011, comet Lovejoy dove through the sun’s corona.  NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured images offering scientists a unique opportunity to observe the phenomenon.

Comet tails have ionized gases which are affected by the sun’s magnetic field, and a comet’s encounter with the sun is a treat for heliophysicits to continue their study of the sun and of comets.

See Comet Grazing the Sun at NASA Video Gallery.

Why are there so many sun grazing comets lately?
